They Stopped My Daughters Heart…

So this happened to us last week and I haven’t had a chance to jump in here and share with you what went on until now, it was very traumatic. As a lot of you know my youngest daughter, who is 30, has Crohns Disease. It has been a very rough road over the last 4 years and last week it got about as bad as you can get without dying!

I was on my way home from work, it was mid afternoon, I was hungry, I hadn’t eaten all day and I was looking forward to a nice cup of coffee and a sandwich. Just about at my driveway the phone rang and it was my daughter, “mum, I’m at the hospital, they had to restart my heart”, all sorts of thoughts rushed through my brain all simultaneously as I let out a roar that sounded like “WHAAAAAT”!!! I spun that car around that fast on our dirt road that dirt and rocks were flying everywhere and I took off back to town in a cloud of smoke and whatever else I left on the road! The thoughts of, what the hell just happened, did my daughter just die? How did she get to the hospital, why didn’t she ring me before this, what is wrong with her, will she survive, were running rampant in my head. I prayed fiercely all the way there! We had just gone into lockdown with this stupid bloody COVID, 8 people or something ridiculous in our entire state and they were putting all he restrictions in place again. I got up to the hospital emergency room where I was met at the front door by the covid squad to take my details and make sure I had no symptoms, which I didn’t. The nurses at the front door doing the covid stuff were very nice and they are just doing a job but they could tell I was clearly stressed and got me through quicker! When I finally go through to the back where she was it took all my strength not to burst into a blubbering mess. There was my child, hooked up to every machine in the place it seemed, pale, swollen and just looking so unwell. Her heart was racing at a rate of 266 beats per minute, the highest rate it can go before heart attack they told us, so in order to prevent that, they had to stop her heart momentarily and then restart it to bring it back to a normal rate. They had the whole crash cart team, the resuscitation team and a heap of doctors all on standby in case it didn’t work and her heart didn’t restart, like WHAT the actual! They didn’t have time to call me before all this was going on so she had to go through all that herself, not that they would have let me in anyway. After about an hour and a half her heart rate had stabilized enough to let her go home. She was completely exhausted, traumatised, thankful and worried all at the same time, but she is a warrior child, she will endure as she has always done. We went straight to the chemist and bought her a heart monitor so she can keep a constant eye on it while we wait for an appointment with a cardiologist to get this sorted. I tell you what, having a child with a disease such as this is very stressful, I can only imagine what mothers go through with children who have terminal illness.

Sitting there with her, I was just so grateful that I am a person of Faith, that I pray over my children every single day, Psalm 91 goes out every day to protect all my children and grandchildren and while you become flesh in the moment your kids are in the hospital, because you are a mum, you always have that knowing that God is right there beside you, His Grace is more than sufficient.

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”
